Our Leadership

Deena Hayes-Greene, Bay Love, and Monica Walker have been in collaboration for over two decades. The Groundwater Metaphor and our practice of change-making comes out of a deep and diverse network, the tradition of U.S. Civil Rights movements, and combined lived experience in public service, community and institutional organizing, multi-racial coalition-building, and corporate strategy.  

Deena Hayes-Greene

Deena is nationally renowned as a trainer, strategist, and institutional leader. Based in Greensboro, NC, she chairs the boards of Guilford County Schools and the International Civil Rights Center and Museum and holds a BA from Guilford College. She is also a key leader in both the Greensboro Health Disparities Collaborative and the Gorrell Street Neighborhood Association.

Monica Walker

Monica Walker is a veteran organizer, artist, trainer, speaker and social activist who has spent the better part of her career organizing inside and outside of large institutions Currently residing in Greensboro, NC, she was previously the Executive Director of the Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for Guilford County Schools. Walker was also a key leader in East Brooklyn Congregations and St. Paul’s Community Baptist Church in Brooklyn New York, where she helped lead broad-based organizing and the renowned MAAFA celebration.

Bay Love

Partner

Bayard “Bay” Love’s work is dedicated to ending structural inequity by building successful campaigns, strong organizations, and empowered leaders. Before founding the Groundwater Institute, he served in leadership roles at long-standing civil rights. While currently residing in Maine, he spent the better part of his adult life in the U.S. South – in New Orleans and North Carolina. He was formerly with Boston Consulting Group, where he worked in retail, healthcare, private equity. He has a MPP from Duke University, an MBA from the University of North Carolina and a BA from Wesleyan University.
